Post-Treatment Instructions for

Dermal Filler

ANESTHETIC / NUMBING

An anesthetic and/or lidocaine within the filler are used to keep you comfortable during treatment. Sensation will gradually return over the next 1–2 hours, and some areas may wear off faster than others—this is normal. Please avoid hot drinks or applying heat to the area until full sensation has returned.

SWELLING

Swelling is expected and typically most noticeable within the first 24–48 hours. Depending on the treatment area, your results may temporarily appear fuller or asymmetric as the tissues heal. Mild firmness or "feeling the filler" are normal during this phase. Sleeping on your back with your head elevated for the first few nights can help reduce swelling. If swelling becomes uncomfortable, an oral antihistamine such as Benadryl at night or a non-drowsy option during the day may be helpful.

BRUISING

Bruising may appear immediately or develop over the next several days, lasting up to a week or longer. Arnica gel or Arnica tablets may help reduce discoloration. Arnica tablets are available for purchase at the clinic for $14.

ACTIVITY

For the first 24 hours, avoid strenuous exercise, swimming, excess heat, saunas, hot yoga, and activities that increase facial pressure (such as face-down massage or tight goggles). Avoid touching, massaging, or manipulating the treated areas unless instructed otherwise. You may resume normal skincare and makeup the following day unless directed differently.

PAIN

Mild soreness or tenderness is normal over the first few days, and ice can provide relief. However, sharp, intense, or severe worsening pain that does not improve is not normal and may signal a more serious complication.

ASYMMETRY

Temporary asymmetry is common in the early healing phase. Swelling, fluid shifts, and differences in tissue response can make one side appear more swollen or full than the other. Thoughtful injection technique is always used to ensure balanced placement, but the healing process can create short-term irregularities. These usually resolve as swelling settles and the filler integrates.

MEDICATIONS & SUPPLEMENTS

You may take Tylenol (Acetaminophen) as needed for discomfort. Avoid NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, and aspirin for 24 hours, as they may increase bruising. Avoid excessive alcohol or blood-thinning supplements (garlic, fish oil, vitamin E) for the first day if possible.

HEALING EXPECTATIONS

Dermal filler takes 2-4 weeks to fully settle. Temporary lumpiness, firmness, or mild irregularities are normal as the product integrates. Final contour, smoothness, and softness should be evaluated only after this period. Although filler is not permanent, many patients enjoy their results for 12–18 months or longer, depending on the area treated, the product used, and individual metabolism.

WHEN TO CONTACT US

Please contact the clinic immediately if you experience severe or increasing pain, blanching or whitening of the skin, vision changes, unusual discoloration, spreading redness, severe bruising, or any symptoms that feel concerning or out of the ordinary.
